In fact, Ovum, a market research firm, predicts that there will be more than 24 million subscriptions until 2021.

5G wireless networks will first transform cellular base stations. With MEC initiatives users will be able to operate applications at the edge of the network or cellular base station. This will decrease the latency that end-user faces to run the application. The load-time of the application will drastically reduce resulting to optimum performance. The application will physically run closer to the user making everything faster. Applications that will make use of MEC platforms span everything from augmented reality and real-time video to location-based services and Internet of Things (IoT).

However, this innovative technology will create challenges for the cellular base stations. Their work won’t even end after publishing APIs and software development kits for the developers. In fact, they will have to invest in orchestration frameworks and management.

To overcome this barrier, there is a huge race amongst traditional carriers and self-proclaimed top application providers that capitalize the networks built by Amazon Web Services and Google. Even though the access to backend IT infrastructure in the cloud is crucial, the war will be won or lost at the edge of the network.

To access this innovation, cloud infrastructure will be an indispensable commodity. It will provide local storage server to the application that will generate a massive amount of data. Those applications, in turn, can then leverage back-end cloud resources to access data as needed.
